Kevin Harvick provided one of the most historic and emotional victories in the modern NASCAR® era when he took the checkered flag at Atlanta Motor Speedway in March of 2001.
Not only was it Harvick’s first series victory in just his third start, but it provided closure to what had been one of the most difficult stretches in the sport’s history. Just weeks earlier, NASCAR® legend Dale Earnhardt tragically lost his life in the first race of the 2001 season. Harvick got the call to take the reins of Earnhardt’s No. 3 - which was rebranded No. 29. When the series got to Atlanta, Harvick proved team owner Richard Childress’ decision to be a winning one. Harvick out-dueled another NASCAR® champion in the closing laps and crossed beneath the checkered flag mere inches ahead of the runner-up. With emotions overflowing in Atlanta, Harvick solidified his place in the NASCAR® record books and set the stage for what turned out to be a legendary career.
